In the last post, you were given some tips on more effective goal setting for your health. To get the most out of this post, I greatly recommend that you go back to the previous post to set a S.M.A.R.T. goal. Use the tools given there to help you make your goal more specific and easier to attain.

In this post, I’d like to show you how can become more motivated and develop some some steps to reach your personal health goals.

First thing you’ll need is a piece of paper or you can click here use the chart provided for  reference.

Now I want you to draw three columns, if aren’t using the chart provided. On the left hand column I would like you to write out your goal. That’s all you need for that column

On the top of  the center column write “WHY?”. This is where you will dig down deep into the purpose of your goal.

This is where you start writing down every possible reason behind why you want to achieve this goal. The more reasons the better. Write out every single reason why this goal is important to you. No reason is too great or too small.

So to continue using an example of losing 30 pounds in four months. What are some reasons that one may have to lose 30 pounds?

Here’s just a list of a few reasons or purposes that one may list.

To have more energy, to fit into my clothes comfortably again,  To maintain healthy blood sugar and fend off diabetes, to ensure healthy blood pressure levels in the future, to set a good example for my children of healthy weight levels, to feel better, to reduce future health care cost, to treat my body as a temple, to run faster, to ride my bike faster, and the list could go on and on

It’s important to work on the why behind your goals to create purpose and motivation. It is much easier to continue when time are challenging. Also it is often more rewarding to have purpose behind your specific actions.

There is a probably a time in all of our lives that we attained an achievement that we thought was never going to happen. Maybe it was getting a certain job, getting your driver’s license , or purchasing a home. We pushed through because within us, we had a giant purpose for this. We persevered through it all, til we got there. Maybe it even seemed easy or fun at times.

Remember, list every single purpose you can possibly think of. The more reasons you have to do something, the more that your actions will move you towards that goal. You can even add more to this list later.

The point is you must set up THE WHY (THE REASON) or the purpose behind your goals. This can keep you going on those days that you can’t really figure out why you’re doing this anyway.

On top of the right hand column, I would like you to write down “Recipes For Success”. I call these “Recipes For Success” because you’re about to write down the ingredients that will help you make your goal a reality. Some people have called this a “massive action plan”. These are the individual actions or steps that you can take to achieve your goal. The more the better because you may not use them all. This is just a list to give you as many options and chances for success as possible.

To stick with the original example of weight loss I will list a few examples of what one might list under “Recipes For Success .

To walk one half hour daily, to get a personal trainer, to go to the local library and pick up some books on weight loss, eat raw fruits and vegetables every day, don’t skip meals, talk to friends who have lost weight and kept it off, discuss my health goals with my doctor, find a health coach, do 10 sit-ups per day, walk five days a week, keep healthier foods in the house, don’t go grocery shopping hungry, and the list could go on and on.

Your “Recipes For Success” should not be one or two items. Write down at least 10 or 20. You may even need to use the back of the paper  to write down all the other steps that you can take. The more the merrier. You don’t have to do them all and you can’t do them all at once. You can just focus on 2 or 3 for the first few weeks.

Making your goals Specific and S.M.A.R.T. and creating “Recipes for Success” can motivate you to be the best you can be and inspire others.

Always aim for personal health, while loving others and being gentle with yourself.
